Edge Computing: part 1- Introduction

Cloud computing has shown a greate potential to provide a high-performance platform for enterprises and individuals with lower cost compared to premises computing platform. Like other technologies it has its own pros and cons.

Security, scalability and high response time are among the main issues in cloud computing.

This issues has motivated researchers to propose the idea of edge computing, by moving some part of the computation to the edge of network close to where data is generation.

The edge computing devices are located in premises controlled by ???. These devices are located between internet connected devices, aka IoTs, and the cloud. Their main roles are processing, analysing, protecting and making decisions based on data.

There are three types of edge computing scenario. In the first scenario:

  • data generator,
  • data consumer,
  • data generator/consumer.

The data generators create data at IoT level
